That night, I told you I wanted to enter a band festival.
That night, I told you I wanted to put out a CD.
That night, I wrote a song where I sang about you.
That night, I felt I wanted to see it all happen with you by my side.
That night, I made a single promise;
That night, I said I’d show you a stunning spectacle.
For you, of the sleepless forest,
I decided I’d show you a dream from which you’d never awake.
When I put out my CD, you’d sneak into Tower Records,
Frantically scanning the area as you fight back tears.
You’d shove limited edition pin badges into your bag,
While pretending that nothing’s going on.
I thought many times about how I’d do things over again…
But you know, I’d probably just end up playing guitar all the time,
And ultimately nothing would change.
Things didn’t really turn out that well… but it might be okay like this;
I wonder if you’re still listening to the song I gave you.
When I get to be on TV, you’d set it up to record,
And sit reverently, staring at the screen as you let your tears flow.
You’d gently take a cigarette to your lips, though you’ve never even smoked,
Trying to recreate your memory of me on that night.
When I get up on stage, you’d stand in a place just far enough away,
Looking downward so as not to be noticed, as you fight back the tears.
As you come close to being found out, those tears begin to shine; you’re not fooling anyone!
When I come down from the stage, deafening applause can be heard,
And you’re looking frantically all around as the tears just keep on flowing.
For you, of the sleepless forest, I’ll give you this dream from which you’ll never wake.
