We look forward to hearing from you!

Romaji Transliteration Team

The romaji team uses a combination of automated and manual checking to produce romanized lyrics so that anyone can read or sing along to their favorite songs, regardless of their knowledge of Japanese characters.
If you want to join the romaji team, you should be:

  • Attentive to detail, with a good ear:

You must be able to listen to a song and make any necessary changes to automatically converted romaji, keeping an ear out for words with multiple readings and pronunciations.

  • At least moderately familiar with Japanese:

You don't need to be fluent in Japanese to produce accurate romaji, but knowledge of basic Japanese grammar and the ability to read hiragana and katakana will help you resolve questions in romanization more quickly.

  • Able to submit at least three romaji transliterations a week:

You should be able to commit to a steady pace of work (if you want to submit more, that's great too!). We try to keep pace with new releases as well.

To apply, please use the application form below.
We look forward to hearing from you!

English Translation Team

The English translation team is the first line of translation on Lyrical Nonsense, creating accurate English translations from Japanese source lyrics.
If you want to join the English translation team, you should be:

  • Highly proficient in Japanese:

Your command of Japanese must be advanced. There are several unique challenges in song translation that require a deeper and more nuanced knowledge of the language, much more so than everyday conversation. You should be able to understand the complete meaning of full phrases, rather than piecing it together line by line. You should be ready to handle unstated subjects, ambiguous clause boundaries, omitted particles, and abstract imagery.

  • Fluent in English:

You must be able to communicate a given artist's voice, including wordplay, figures of speech, and other elements, in grammatically and idiomatically correct English.

  • Receptive to constructive criticism:

We often collaborate to raise the quality of each release. You should be open to suggestions, evaluate them objectively, and be willing to make changes as needed.

  • Able to submit at least one song translation a week:

You should be able to commit to a steady pace of work (if you want to submit more, that's great too!). We try to keep pace with new releases as well.

To apply, please use the application form below.
We look forward to hearing from you!

Global Translation Team

The global translation team is responsible for creating translations in a wide range of languages to reach fans all around the world.
If you want to join the global translation team, you should be:

  • Highly proficient in English or fluent in Japanese:

If you are translating from English to your target language, you must be able to fully comprehend the English translation. If you are translating directly from Japanese to your target language, you must have a fluent level of comprehension (see the Japanese proficiency requirements for the English translation team).

  • Fluent in your target language:

You must be able to communicate a given artist's voice, including wordplay, figures of speech, and other elements, in your target language in a grammatically and idiomatically correct way.

Music Review Team

The music review team dives deep into albums to explain, contextualize, and recommend (or not) recent releases.
If you want to join the music review team, you should be:

  • Knowledgeable about Japanese music:

You should have broad familiarity with the artists and trends in one or more circles of the Japanese music scene, follow multiple bands, and be able to draw connections between various artists and styles.

  • A strong English writer:

Whether your review is positive or negative, you should be able to craft compelling arguments and present fresh insights in clean and flowing copy.

  • Receptive to constructive criticism:

We often collaborate to raise the quality of each release. You should be open to suggestions, evaluate them objectively, and be willing to make changes as needed.

  • Able to submit a review in a reasonable timeframe:

If you commit to writing a review, you should be able to complete your submission within a maximum of two weeks of an album's release. Reviews should be approximately 600 words, though more or less is acceptable as the release justifies.

To apply, please send an email to admin@lyrical-nonsense.com including:

  • A brief description of who you are and your language background.
  • A short list of your favorite Japanese artists and genres.
  • An approximately 300-word mini-review: This should be a short review of a Japanese album, EP, or single released within the last three months and that hasn't already been reviewed on Lyrical Nonsense. You don't need to address every aspect of the release, but you should strive to make at least one strong point in the space provided.
  • One other music writing sample: This can be any music writing sample that you've previously posted or released and that you think represents your best writing. If you don't think you have a suitable sample, please submit a second 300-word mini-review.

We look forward to hearing from you!
