Welcome! At Lyrical Nonsense, we provide professional-level English translations for Japanese songs, as well as providing other language translations by a diverse team from around the world!

There's just so much to do; join us in translating the world! We're looking for J>E translators who have a strong literary flair and understand the unique challenges of song translation. In addition to native-level English, you should have a high level of grammatical comprehension in Japanese, capable of identifying full phrases/ideas and their correct meaning. If you have a strong understanding of nuance in Japanese and a solid literary style, we would love to hear from you!☆ You should be confident that your Japanese comprehension is at least beyond JLPT N1.
☆ You should be receptive to constructive criticism from your peers.
☆ You should be actively available to submit at least two translations per week (ideally much more).
☆ Please be aware that we are not currently a commercial project; we donate our time out of love for our craft.The application process is simple! Please send us two song translations: one from an artist you like, and one from an artist you really dislike.Join us in our goal to raise the level of art, quality, and accuracy applied to Japanese lyric translation!
Do you make exceptional lyric translations in your native language from a Japanese or English source? We think it'd be nice to make LN as international as possible!Please submit two trial translations via email (of songs already translated on Lyrical Nonsense): one from an artist you like and one from an artist you dislike. Our staff will take a look, judging your grasp of nuance in the source language and literary ability in your target language.(Please be aware that we are not currently a commercial project; we donate our time out of love for our craft.)In your email, please be sure to address the following points in some way:
・ We require that you have a high confidence in your writing ability + a fluent understanding of either Japanese or English. What is your language background and what are your current study practices?
・ Please note that we expect you to submit translations regularly (at least one song per week). To develop and maintain your skills, consistency is essential. Tell us about your availability and how often you plan to contribute.
・ Everyone has different motivations for why they translate. LN needs some help on the admin side of things! We're looking for someone to help with creating/managing page content found on the site. If you also have an interest in transliterating from Japanese-->Romaji, that would be even better! The more time our translators can spend translating, the further we can grow. So come join us in building a more complete resource! (This is also a great activity to do while listening to music if you're behind in your library like I am.)
